Williamsville South's boys bowling team is big on experience and talent.

Despite having only two seniors, coach Rick Newton returns a veteran core of bowlers who have seen time in the varsity lineup.

Back for South are seniors Russ Scheiss and Justin Maggio, juniors Alex and Adam Petrie, freshman Tony Cirbus and eighth-grader Matt Petrie. Alex and Adam Petrie are cousins; Alex and Matt Petrie are brothers.

Scheiss, the team captain, and Alex Petrie are entering their fifth years on the team. Adam Petrie is back for his fourth season. Cirbus and Maggio come back for their third seasons. Matt Petrie returns for a second year.

Scheiss, Alex and Adam Petrie return on the Billies "A" team. Alex Petrie leads off. Scheiss will anchor. Cirbus, anchor on "B" as an eighth-grader, moves into the "A" lineup.

Newton said Scheiss can compete against any scholastic bowler in Western New York.

"He's a smart bowler," said Newton. "He knows exactly what to do and not to do. I don't think anything is going to fool him this year."

Scheiss was injured for part of last season and still ended with a high game of 268 and 702 set. He also was named to last year's Roy Summer All-Tournament team after bowling a 279 and a 1389 set. South took second as a team.

Alex Petrie led the Billies last year with a 209 average last year which was the third best average in ECIC II. He also made the all-division team.

Newton said Alex Petrie has the best delivery on the team.

"He does everything right," said Newton. "He doesn't carry the pins. I expect him to do really well."

Newton said Cirbus is a powerful bowler and knows how to adjust to different lane conditions.

"He throws the ball like he wants to split the pins in half," said Newton. "He gets the ball down the lane quickly and scatters them."

Newton said Scheiss, Alex Petrie, Adam Petrie and Cirbus thinks each could average over 200.

Seventh-grader Aaron Broardt (160 average) leads off the "B" squad. Eighth-grader Matt Petrie and Maggio also have starting spots. Eighth-grader Jake Morris and junior Andy Diakun are competing for the fourth starting position. Maggio and Matt Petrie are returning starters. Diakun, Morris and Broardt are out for the first time.

Newton said newcomer, sophomore left-hander Max Kahn, is learning the sport quickly and could also crack a spot in the starting lineup by the end of the season.

Also on the team is juniors Brian Van Ee, Dan Archdeacon, sophomore Matt Terrana and eighth-grader Charlie Galonte ( mgr.)

South finished third in ECIC Division II last year with a 7-3 record. Newton attributes his team's success to volunteer assistant Paul Mamon, who coaches many in a Saturday morning travel league at Transit Lanes.

Newton is optimistic of his team's chances.

"I feel like we have a shot of winning the division and doing some damage at sectionals," said Newton. "We need to get the extra spare or a three or four-bagger and not drop down to 170 when we don't have to."

South is off to a good start after taking sixth at the Maryvale Holiday Tournament on Dec. 3 at Airport Lanes.

The Billies had a five-person pin total of 2,992 for a 200 per person average. Scheiss rolled a 697 series. Cirbus added a 613.

South lost to Hamburg, 6-1, on Monday at Legion Lanes. They bowl Sweet Home and Williamsville East on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, at Transit Lanes, and West Seneca East on Monday, Dec. 17 at Wimbledon Lanes.
