It is still early in the 2007-08 high school bowling season but Sweet Home is already using one of its team strengths to its advantage.
The Panthers, co-champions in ECIC Division II a year ago, used its team depth to pull out a come-from-behind 4-3 win over Hamburg last Wednesday at Legion Lanes. Sweet Home had never won at Legion Lanes.
Panthers coach Kathy McDonald subbed in several bowlers on the "B" team in the third game and it gave the team a spark. Sophomore Ryan Clark rolled a high-game of 225. Damian Annas, a sophomore first-year left-hander, threw a 180.
"Those scores were the difference between winning and losing the match," said McDonald.
McDonald is real excited about her "A" team. She lost half of the starting lineup to graduation but the two newcomers to "A", seniors Brian Barnas and Aaron Klein, bowled on "B" last year.
Returning "A" bowlers include junior Ryan Kaminski and senior Peter Schaefer.
Kaminski tied with Klein for high average last year with a 208.43. Kaminski, the anchor on "A", has bowled for Sweet Home since seventh grade. He bowled a 200 game and 568 set against Hamburg.
McDonald loves everything about Ryan Kaminski's game.
"He's got a great arm swing, is very consistent to the pocket, good on spares and has a strong mental game," said McDonald. "When he's struggling, he doesn't get down on himself."
Schaefer has improved a ton over his four years with the team, McDonald said. She expects him to average over 200 this year. Schaefer is off to a great start, throwing a 615 set against Hamburg.
Barnas, who sports a 180 average, will lead off the "A" team. He enters his third year on the team. Klein anchored the "B" team last year. McDonald likes his leadership skills.
The Panthers' "B" team will include, from leadoff to anchor, junior Steven Robinson, seniors Shaun Louis and Jonathan Lo- Presti, and sophomore Jason Huebert.
Louis and LoPresti are each three-year varsity members and saw time in the "B" team starting lineup as juniors.
Louis shot a 221 this year against Hamburg and a 259 game and 627 series at the Maryvale Holiday Tournament on Dec. 3 at Airport Lanes. His brother, Chris, a sophomore, is also on the team.
LoPresti averaged 185 last year. He shot a 200 against Hamburg.
Robinson has been with the team for three years but never started until this year. McDonald said Robinson straightened up his arm swing from last year and it has greatly improved his game. He was the only Sweet Home bowler who participated in all three games on "B" against Hamburg, rolling a 579 set (two 184s and 211).
McDonald said Huebert, a newcomer to the team, has a good bowling game. He shot a 269 against Hamburg.
"He's very consistent," said Mc- Donald. "His emotions don't get the best of him."
Clark, Annas, senior Alex Vanlangen, Chris Louis and Alex and Jeff Nolte, a sophomore and senior, respectively, will rotate in on the "B" team.
Also helping out this year will be Kathy's father, Frank Coburn, one of the top youth bowling coaches in the nation.
Sweet Home took ninth as a team at the Maryvale Holiday Tournament.
The Panthers had a total pin count of 2,923 pins. Schaefer led the team with a 636 series. He was followed by Chris Louis (627), Klein (245-601), Kaminski (545) and Barnas (514).
They beat Iroquois, 6-1, on Monday at Manor II Lanes.
