Alzheimer's Association, WNY Chapter honors volunteers The Alzheimer's Association, WNY Chapter, announced its yearly award recipients at its 26th annual meeting, which was held at the Fairdale Banquet Center in Amherst. Awards were presented to both people and organizations that have made "extraordinary contributions to the association and better the lives of persons with dementia." Volunteer of the Year awards were presented to Pat Neuland of Alden, Rachel Fisken of Albion and Megan Militello of North Tonawanda for their longstanding, significant and passionate support. The Community Service Award was presented to WNY Parrott Head Club and Eric and Lisa Wiedemann, owners of Home Instead Inc., for their significant contributions in support of the chapter's programs, services and fundraising efforts. Nancy Swiston of Tonawanda was the recipient of the Community Awareness Award for her outstanding personal commitment to promoting awareness of Alzheimer's disease and the needs of caregivers, locally and nationally. Sally Sanderson, a registered nurse from Chautauqua Opportunities, was awarded the William P. Gillick Quality of Life Award for improving the quality of life of persons with dementia and their families. Three special recognition awards were given out this year. The Spirit of Hope Special Recognition went to the Friday Morning Couples Support Group because they exhibit the best of what life can be living with dementia. Kelly Miller of Williamsville was awarded the Youth Special Recognition for her fundraising efforts. Lastly, the Youth Team Special Recognition went to the Canisius College Hockey Team for its enthusiastic and generous help at the Alzheimer's Association annual Erie County Memory Walk. Two Memory Cups were awarded to the top fundraising Friends and Family and Corporate teams for the 2007 annual Memory Walk that was held in September. The Friends and Family Cup went to Pauline's Team, which was headed by the Rev. William Wipfler of West Seneca. Pauline's Team raised more than $18,500. The Corporate Cup went to Pesci's Pizza in Clarence, which was headed by Chris Phillips of Depew. Pesci's Pizza raised more than $18,000. |
