Amherst Latin students win awards

Eight Amherst Latin students competed in The New York State Junior Classical League Fall Festival at Skaneateles HS on Nov. 17, and several won awards.

The Fall Festival is a series of intellectual, academic, and athletic contests in which 180 Latin students from all parts of the state took part.

In Latin II, sophomore Devon Reynolds took first place on the mythology examination. Her classmate Will Pelham took first place in the academic pentathlon (a test containing questions on five different areas of study in classics). Senior Carol Dannenhoffer took the second place award among Latin II students in the Latin grammar competition. Her classmate, Yi Yu Chen, took second place in the examination on English derivatives from Latin, closely followed by Pelham, who won the third place ribbon.

Amherst students swept the Senior High Chess competition. Senior Jerry Ren won the first place trophy, with Reynolds and Dannenhoffer winning second and third place ribbons, respectively.

Amherst Latin students compete annually in JCL competitions. The Amherst chapter of JCL has been in existence since 1971, one of the longest continuous terms of JCL membership in New York.
