Residents asked to ID damaged trees, remove orange ribbons

In light of the extension that the Town of Amherst has received for tree takedowns, Highway Superintendent Robert Anderson is continuing the Phase 3 "Charlie Brown trees" removal work.

Residents should contact the department with the street address of the tree(s) they would like reviewed for possible removal. People are asked to look at the street trees in front of their houses, concentrating on "matchstick" or "Charlie Brown" trees that may survive for a short time but no longer serve any useful purpose. These trees have visible branch, trunk or crown damage.

Anyone who thinks a tree meets these criteria should e-mail checkmytree@ amherst.ny.us or call 631-5990, ext. 19 and leave a message. All notification should be submitted by Dec. 7.

In addition, the Highway Department is requesting that residents remove any remaining orange ribbons from their right-of-way trees.

The orange ribbons were used as a preliminary assessment tool in the fall of 2006 and no longer serve a purpose.
