Brompton Heights honors resident veterans Brompton Heights Assisted Living Residence held a Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 9 to honor resident veterans for their dedication and service. A special recognition was given to Robert Carr, a Purple Heart recipient and the last living survivor of the USS Reuben James. A staff member from Rep. Thomas Reynolds, R-Amherst, made the presentation. The Reuben James was the first U.S. Navy ship sunk during World War II. It was torpedoed by a German U-Boat Wolfpack while escorting a British war material convoy just off the coast of Iceland on Oct. 31, 1941. Carr was one of the 44 surviving crew members; 115 lost their lives. The ceremony included recognition of Brompton's veterans and a history of Carr's service. |
