Petrina Scinta Neureuter has been named the first female high school principal in the Williamsville Central School District.
The School Board approved her appointment as North High School principal at its Nov. 13 meeting.
Neureuter, an assistant principal at North since 2001, was named the school's interim principal in July following the resignation of Robert Tubbs, who had served as principal for a year.
She had been an assistant principal at Depew High School for five years and a tenured business teacher at North for 11 years.
"I think, first and foremost, being very familiar with district policy and the expectations it has for teachers," she said when talking about her permanent transition into the position, using her experience as an advantage. "I have the privilege of knowing the teachers here; they are talented and dedicated."
She added that she also formed relationships with parents and students during the years.
Neureuter earned bachelor's and master's degrees in business education from the University at Buffalo, a master's degree in educational administration and supervision from Canisius College, and is certified as a school administrator and supervisor in New York State.
"Mrs. Neureuter has been a valuable asset to the North High community for many years, both as a teacher and as an administrator," said Superintendent Howard Smith. "She is a strong, well-respected leader who will continue to foster the tradition of successful teaching and student learning at North High."
North High School is the largest of Williamsville's three high schools, with approximately 1,500 students in grades 9 through 12. A selection committee comprised of North High School staff members, parents, and a student representative reviewed more than 20 applications and interviewed six candidates before unanimously endorsing Neureuter for the position.
"Having spent the majority of my career in education at North as both a teacher and administrator, it gives me great pleasure to assume this important leadership role," she said.
Neureuter added that she doesn't expect a "growing period" with this appointment, but instead a smooth transition because of her familiarity with the school.
As acting interim for the first quarter of the year, she said student behavior hasn't been an issue and the expectations were made very clear early on.
Her annual salary is $108,750. Neureuter resides in Cheektowaga with her husband, John.
