Sports briefs Williamsville East graduate Nicole Ostanski, a sophomore at the University of Rochester, made the University of Rochester women's basketball team as a forward/center. University of Rochester is ranked 24th in the nation in Division III. Steve Berus, an East Amherst resident and Williamsville North graduate, won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.85) and 200 medley relay (1:42.86) in the Rochester Institute of Technology swimming and diving team's 144-99 win over Oswego State College on Oct. 30 Katie Pietrak, an Amherst resident and Nardin Academy graduate, earned Liberty League Cross Country All-Academic Team honors. Pietrak is a sophomore at William Smith College. To earn a spot on the team, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 and be at least a sophomore academically. Medaille College will host a six-week spring training baseball program for players in grades 1 through 12 from Jan. 20 to Feb. 24. Medaille College head coach Ron Nero will direct the program in conjunction with Midwest Baseball Academy. Sessions are offered in advanced hitting and pitching at a cost of $99 for six weeks. The Tonawanda Aquettes, a nationally recognized synchronized swimming team comprised of girls from all over Western New York, will host a free introduction to synchronized swimming class for girls ages 7-12 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Hoover Middle School, 249 Thorncliff Road, Tonawanda. Girls will be taught some basic synchro skills and a short routine performed to music at the end of the class. To register or for more information, contact Patti at 838-2402 or visit melbers.com. The Aquettes are also currently recruiting girls for their Novice Instructional Program and their Competitive Travel Team. Cleveland Hill will be hosting the 2007 Frederick J. Puff Memorial Boys Swim Meet on Saturday, Dec. 29, and is seeking other varsity teams to participate. The cost of participation is $20 per team. Warm-ups for the meet will begin at 9 a.m., with the actual competition slated to kick off at 10.
