Symoniak takes 15th in Class A

Amherst Central sophomore Brenna Symoniak took 15th in the Class A girls race at Saturday's New York State Championships at Norwood-Norfolk High School.

Symoniak finished the 3.1-mile course in 19:07.

Amherst coach Bob O'Donnell said Symoniak got out of the gates slow.

"The course narrowed and she got caught in the middle and couldn't get out," said O'Donnell. "At one point, she was 12th, but by then, she had expended too much energy."

Amherst senior Dave Szymkowiak was 52nd in the Class A boys race in 17:18.9.

Williamsville North junior Mike Thielman took 104th in the boys Class AA race in 18:14.
