Voters deny propositions All three propositions on the town's Nov. 6 ballot were defeated. The first, the open space bond resolution for $12 million, failed by a vote of 8,268 to 13,618. The second, a bond resolution for $3.1 million for the Audubon Golf Course, failed, 7,343 votes to 13,683. The third, to create a local law requiring the deputy supervisor be a member of the Town Board. also failed, 9,058 to 12,166. The most publicized of the three was in regard to bonding $12 million for the open space. The Amherst Chamber of Commerce and the Buffalo Niagara Builders Association held press conferences in August opposing the proposal. Council Member Bill Kindel said he was disappointed that it failed, but also that the groups that sent out mailings and purchased advertisements didn't put their name on their accusations. "They weren't willing, or didn't have the courage, to put their name on the material," he said. "They made such falsifications but were anonymous. It's not their right to make up lies." Defeated in his attempt for re-election, Kindel said his final mission will shift to see that expansion doesn't occur, including building sewers and roads. The second proposition was placed on the ballot by a resolution sponsored by Council Member Shelly Schratz. She had previously stated that the money was needed to make necessary repairs to the Audubon Golf Course. The third proposition dates back to January when Supervisor Satish Mohan appointed Roy Wixson, an Amherst attorney, as deputy supervisor. Board members debated the meaning of the law as to whether that was allowable and if it needed board approval. Council Member Dan Ward had supported the resolution. With the failure of the proposition it would appear that a deputy supervisor could be anyone from the Town of Amherst. |
