Field hockey captain, valedictorian recognized

Nicole Lewis
Williamsville North Student Council recognizes the outstanding achievements of two members of its senior class each month. Students featured in this column are selected by faculty recommendation. The Senior Spartan Spots for November are Alexander Rand and Nicole Lewis.

Rand, son of Lawrence and Sandra Rand of Williamsville, is valedictorian of North's 2008 senior class. Rand not only excels in his grades but also participates in many extracurricular activities, including Stock Market Investment Club, Cultural Awareness, Spanish Club, Science Olympiads, Masterminds, Scholastic Bowl, Math Honor Society and National Honor Society.

He is currently president of Amnesty International and founded the History Club. Outside .school, Rand contributes to his community by volunteering at Weinberg Campus and the Amherst Y.E.S. program. In his free time he enjoys playing tennis and bowling.

After graduation he hopes to attend Dartmouth College and major in pre-med and biology.

Lewis, daughter of Raymond and Celeste Lewis of East Amherst, has been North's varsity field hockey starting goalie for the last four years and is the captain this year. Along with field hockey, Lewis has played for North's lacrosse and indoor track teams. This year she was a silver medalist in field hockey at the Empire State Games, and just last month she was named the WIVB Channel 4 scholar-athlete.

Alexander Rand
Outside of sports, she is a member of the National Honor Society, National Math Honor Society and Student Council. She took second place in the D.E.C.A. state competition and went to internationals her junior year. Lewis was co-sports editor for the yearbook and treasurer and historian for the class of 2008 steering committee. Beyond school, she is a member of Amherst Y.E.S. and an altar server at St. Christopher's Church.

She is employed at CVS/Pharmacy. In her free time, she enjoys reading, photography, exercising and playing sports.

Following graduation, Lewis plans to play Division 1 field hockey at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn. Her intended major is physical therapy and athletic training.
