Another successful season for Amherst field hockey
      The Amherst field hockey team finished the 2007 season with a tenth consecutive appearance in the Section VI Class B semifinals and a winning record. Unfortunately, two defensive mistakes were costly in the game against Williamsville South and ended their playoff run with a 2-0 loss.

Symoniak takes 15th in Class A
Cross country
      Amherst Central sophomore Brenna Symoniak took 15th in the Class A girls race at Saturday's New York State Championships at Norwood-Norfolk High School. Symoniak finished the 3.1-mile course in 19:07. Amherst coach Bob O'Donnell said Symoniak got out of the gates slow.

      Casey Matthews added another title and record to her outstanding high school diving career. The Williamsville North senior broke the 11-dive Section VI record with 550.15 points en route to winning her fifth straight section title at last Wednesday's diving sectionals at Fredonia State College.

      Sacred Heart knew they didn't have a shot to win this year's All-Catholic swim meet. However, second place was a real possibility. The Sharks beat out Mount St. Mary's for second place in team scoring, 60-52. Nardin won All-Catholics with 122 points.

McMahon named Player of the Year
      Alfred State College sophomore outside hitter Brianne McMahon, a Sweet Home graduate, has been named the Region III Division III Player of the Year for the second year in a row. McMahon has played in 97 games this year for the Lady Pioneers, which are 35-4 and Region III champions.

Double duty weekend for Clarence Swim Club
      Clarence Swim Club participated in two separate swim meets this past weekend, a Bronze IMX in Brockport on Saturday and an open meet in East Aurora on Sunday. The East Aurora meet welcomed 36 Clarence swimmers, including seven from the Learn-to-Swim connected with the club.

Titan swimmers host meet, set nine club records
      The Town of Tonawanda Titans hosted a Halloween meet from Oct. 26 to 28 to kick off the short-course season. There were nine new club records set and 390 personal-best swims. Twenty-one Amherst residents competed for the Titans.

      The Squirt Red Wings defeated the Bruins, 3-1, on Sunday. The Red Wings opened the scoring on a play that began at their blue line. Marisa Notaro fed a perfect pass to a streaking Tim Kreuz, whose shot pulled Bruins' goalie Alex Bender out of position and Hunter Noll jumped on the rebound.
