12U Lady Knights top Niagara Falls, Grimsby

The 12U Lady Knights defeated Niagara Falls, 2-1, in a hard-fought battle on Saturday.

Niagara Falls scored first. The tenacity of the forward line of Jessica Gates, Emma Ruggiero and Katherine Yoder, who wreaked havoc in Niagara Falls' end and fiercely protected their goaltender, prevented any further goals.

Caitlin Mitchell tied the game with two minutes remaining in the second when she stole the puck in Niagara Falls' end and fired it past the goalie. Amherst turned up the heat in the third, and with 40 seconds remaining, Stephanie Pickard fed the puck to Mitchell, who scored the game winner.

Sunday's game rivaled Saturday's in excitement with Amherst defeating Grimsby, 2-1.

Once again, Amherst trailed 1-0 late in the third. However, Amherst would not give up. Amelia Gajewski, Caitlin Mitchell and Caroline Soh, the only defensemen able to make the game, played with heart, shift after shift.

The forwards ferociously crashed Grimsby's net, and with two minutes remaining, Emily Certo scored to tie the game.

Amherst didn't let up, and 30 seconds later, Mitchell scored on a slap shot from the point to give Amherst the victory. This game was a team effort of which the coaches were very proud.
