School swim records to likely fall at All-Catholics The Sacred Heart girls swimming team heads into Wednesday's All-Catholics meet hoping to break school records and win several individual events. No school records have fallen this season but a couple are in jeopardy. Assistant coach Beth Budniak said juniors Laura Savattieri and Christina Ruggiero are ten tenths of a second off from breaking school records in the 50-yard freestyle and 200 individual medley, respectively. Budniak said Savattieri is a favorite to win the 100 breaststroke. She took second at last year's All-Catholics, swimming a school record 1:13.36. She also will lead the team in the 50 free. Sophomore Courtney Denk is looking to place either second or third in the 100 breast. Junior Jessica Cichochi will also swim the 50 free. The Sharks' relays have been strong all season. The 200 medley relay of Ruggiero, Savattieri, sophomore Karalyn Evanco and Cichochi, the 200 free relay of Savattieri, Alex Skomra, freshman Caroline Niederpruem and Cichochi and the 400 free of Cichochi, Sarah Mastrandrea, Kristen Forcucci and Ruggiero are only behind Nardin for the top spot in the Monsignor Martin Association. At All-Catholics last year, the 200 free relay won in a school record 1:46.56, the 200 medley relay took second, and the 400 free finished second in a school record 3:58.17. Forcucci (500 free), Mastrandrea (200 free, 100 fly), and Niederpruem (100 free) should also swim well. Sacred Heart finished second place in the regular season with a 7-3 record. All-Catholics start at 6 p.m. at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center. e-mail: pnagy@beenews.com |
