Kristina Arcury bounded her way to a second Section VI all-around title Saturday with consistency, poise and focus Saturday in her home gym at Williamsville South High School.
The senior closed out her high school career by bookending titles. She also won as a freshman. But this one tasted a little sweeter.
"It feels great," said Arcury, who scored a 37.4 to outdo Kenmore East's Sarah Nadrowski (36.6) and Lancaster Amanda Recor (36.45)." Knowing it was my last year and I finally pulled it back together. Freshman year, I wasn't really expecting it. This year I was, because I knew me, Sarah and Amanda were the top three."
Arcury won the uneven bars (9.55) and balance beam (9.7) titles as well. And it was that strong balance beam routine, which set a new sectional record, that separated her from Nadrowski and Recor. Nadrowski and Recor both fell off the beam, taking a .5 deduction from their scores. Arcury stayed on and didn't so much as waver.
"That really helped a lot," Arcury said. "Staying on the beam gave me more confidence that I could win."
Arcury finished fourth on vault (8.85) and floor (9.3).
The balance beam, known in gymnastics circles as the great equalizer, was Arcury's third event, while Nadrowski (9.05) and Recor (8.75) both did it in the second rotation.
"I was crooked on my back layout and couldn't get my foot behind me," explained Nadrowski, who qualified for her fourth New York State Championships. "It was disappointing, but I got over it. I went to floor and had an awesome routine. It made up for it."
Recor, who had been ranked second heading into the meet, won the floor exercise (9.5) and vault (9.35) titles. Finishing ninth on beam and seventh on bars (8.85) dropped her to third in the all-around competition as Nadrowski was second on vault (8.95), bars (9.2) and floor (9.4) and seventh on beam (9.05).
"I'm definitely happy with it," Recor said. "That's what I was looking for. I figured I would finish third."
Lancaster, with the largest contingent of 18 girls, won the team competition with a score of 106.475. Williamsville South (105.85), last year's champion Hamburg (104.2), Frontier (103.175) and Clarence (97.425) rounded out the top five. The top three scores on each event count toward the team total.
"I can't wipe the smile off my face," said Lancaster coach and Section VI Coordinator Donna Aquino. "I'm just so ecstatic. It was a wonderful team all season long. We just dreamed about this. We kept talking about team, team, team and how they could do it. They stayed healthy, which was key. And everyone contributed to this."
Arcury, Nadrowski and Recor will lead the Section VI team at the New York State Championships in March in Carmel. They will be joined by Frontier's Nicole Radon (vault, bars, floor) and Kelsey Kryszak (bars), Hamburg's Elise Konikoff (vault) and Taylor Wierzba (beam, floor), Williamsville South's Kailyn Arcury (vault, bars, beam), and Kenmore West's Marissa Fabrizi (beam).
"State team looks really strong," Aquino said. "We have a lot of girls back from last year and a lot of depth. We took second last year, but we want first back."
Other gymnasts from the Town of Amherst competing at sectionals were Amherst's Jordan Pescrillo and Annalise Polvino, Williamsville North's Megan Dressel and Allison Corretore, Williamsville East's Ashley Materise and Kristen Kelly, Williamsville South's Cassidy Strong, Christina Haffa and Rachel Utech and Sweet Home's Jill Daddario and Lydia Penberthy.
Daddario was 21st in all-around and had an 8.0 on beam. Penberthy best's event was a 8.1 on vault. Sweet Home finished 11th.
North, Amherst and East finished eighth through tenth in team scoring.
