Sports briefs The Buffalo Defenders,Western New York's largest girls AAU basketball organization, will have open tryouts for its 2008 teams on Sunday, Nov. 11 at the St. Mary's School for the Deaf main gym, 2253 Main St., Buffalo. The tryout times are: 9 to 11 a.m. (12-year-old), 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (13-year-old), 2 to 4 p.m. (14-year-old) and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. (15 and 16-year-olds). Girls must be the age they're trying out for as of July 1, 2007. For more information, call Larry Hughes at 480-3606. Steve Berus, a Williamsville North graduate and East Amherst resident, won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.61) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.36) in the Rochester Institute of Technology men's swimming and diving team's 189-98 win over Fredonia State College on Oct. 27. The Western New York Softball Hall of Fame will induct the Class of 2007 at a formal ceremony Friday, Nov. 9 at Woodlawn Fire Hall, 3281 Lake Shore Road, Blasdell. Tickets cost $30 and are available by calling 361-453 or 675-3237. Cleveland Hill will be hosting the 2007 Frederick J. Puff Memorial Boys Swim Meet on Saturday, Dec. 29, and is seeking other varsity teams to participate. The cost of participation is $20 per team. Warm-ups for the meet will begin at 9 a.m., with the actual competition slated to kick off at 10. Williamsville North graduate and Williamsville resident Ainsley Stoll was named to the State University of New York Athletic Conference All-Conference first team for field hockey. Stoll, a freshman at Oneonta State College, has had an immediate impact on the field hockey program as a rookie. She has started all 18 games and leads the team with 25 points on 11 goals and two assists. She also has five of the team's nine game-winning goals this season. |
