Mount Calvary trees benefited by art show

The October surprise storm that hit Western New York one year ago devastated 350 park-like acres that make up the Mount Calvary Cemetery Group.

More than 10,000 indigenous trees across the five connecting cemetery properties were severely compromised or destroyed.

A benefit art show will be held for the cemetery, 800 Pine Ridge Road, Cheektowaga, from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 and from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10 at Vern Stein Art Gallery, 5747 Main St., Williamsville.

The event will feature original paintings and sculptures by some of the world's finest contemporary artists.

A portion of proceeds from the sale will help restore or replace the trees and arboretums taken by the storm.

"We are delighted to have this opportunity to share this exciting event with Mount Calvary and its Heritage Foundation," said art dealer Vern Stein, owner of the Williamsville gallery.

The trunk show will include a $1 million collection of original canvasses and sculptures never before seen in Western New York, in addition to the works of noted local artists.

In total, more than 1,000 works created by 100 nationally and internationally renowned artists will be available for purchase throughout the two-day sale.

A wine and cheese reception for the trunk show will take place Friday evening at the Vern Stein Gallery from 5 to 9 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
