Covenant to host regional spelling bee Covenant Academy, a nondenominational Christian school on McConkey Drive in the Town of Tonawanda, will host the Association of Christian Schools International WNY Region Spelling Bee at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13. The spelling bee will consist of two simultaneous preliminary rounds for fifth- and sixth-graders and seventh- and eighth-graders respectively. The final round will take place after lunch. In addition to Covenant, there will be six other schools competing for the opportunity to attend the Northeast Regional Spelling Bee, to be held in Sturbridge, Mass., in March. The schools include Centerpoint Christian Academy in Angelica, Christ Community Church School in Brockport, Christian Academy of WNY in Lockport, Genesee Country Christian School in Geneseo, Houghton Academy in Houghton and Ross Corners Christian Academy in Vestal. Winners from Sturbridge will continue on to compete in Washington, D.C. in May. Amherst pupils representing Covenant are fifth-grader Andrew Asamoah and seventh-grader Patrick Asamoah, both of Williamsville, and eighth-grader Danielle Bruch of Amherst. Representing Clarence will be sixth-grader Charlie VanDette. The spelling bee program is designed to help students increase their vocabularies, learn spelling concepts and develop proper English usage that will benefit them throughout life. |
