New program for children with autism introduced Buffalo Hearing and Speech Center has introduced a program for children ages 3-5 who are exhibiting characteristics of autism and pervasive developmental disorders. The program embraces the philosophy of Dr. Stanley Greenspan, who is considered a leader in autism education. The classrooms opened in September. "With the increasing diagnosis of autism - 1 in 150 children in America have an autism spectrum disorder - we saw the need to work with these children and their families," said Joseph J. Cozzo, president and chief executive officer of Buffalo Hearing and Speech Center. The program teaches children skills in developmental areas with a focus on peer and adult social interactions. The goal is for children to attain age appropriate communication, social/ emotional, behavioral, educational, fine and gross motor skills. In the Greenspan approach, parents play an extremely important role in their children's program. Parents are provided with training and support on a monthly basis to help families understand their child's disabilities and education. Buffalo Hearing and Speech Center has a location at 420 Evans St., Williamsville. For information, call 505-2000 or visit www.askbhsc. org. |
