Veterans Day services planned

The significance of Veterans Day is, the treaty signed on Nov. 11, 1918 ended World War I. In 1954, the United States designated Nov. 11 as Veterans Day to honor veterans of all U.S. wars. In recognition the following organizations have planned ceremonies:

  • Weinberg Campus, 2700 N. Forest Road, near John James Audubon Parkway, will hold a service at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 that is open to the public. Veterans are encouraged to dress in commemorative attire. Patriot guard riders will circle the front of the main building, and certificates of recognition will be presented to veterans residing at Weinberg Campus. A presentation of colors will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a parade through the lobby, followed by a 2 p.m. ceremony in the Meadows Apartments, 2650 N. Forest Road. For information, call 639-3311.

  • Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 77 will conduct its annual Veterans Day services at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11 at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the Buffalo Naval & Military Park at the foot of Main Street.

  • St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 4007 Main St., near Eggert Road, will honor veterans at a potluck luncheon at noon Sunday, Nov. 11 at the parish hall. John A. Schriver will interview Howard Emerson of Snyder and Gerald Miller of Williamsville, members of the "Greatest Generation," about their service to their country.

  • ElderWood Health Care at Heathwood will honor resident and staff veterans during a ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12 at the facility, 815 Hopkins Road. Members of the George F. Lamm American Legion Post No. 422, of Amherst, will raise a new American flag during a special Veterans Day flag dedication ceremony. This ceremony will honor U.S. veterans, particularly the 17 residents and four staff members at the facility who are veterans of foreign wars. For information, call 688-0111.
