Amherst bows out in quarterfinals Amherst Central's girls soccer season ended in the Section VI Class A prequarterfinals. Amherst, seeded ninth, fell to eighth-seed Albion, 3-2, last Tuesday. Amherst trailed 2-1 at halftime but Albion's Kristen Palmer scored the game-winning goal two minutes into the second half to make it 3-1. The Lady Tigers' Meagan Hurley scored five minutes later to cut the deficit to 3-2 but the team could not come up with the equalizer. "Albion's goalie made some key saves along the way," said Amherst coach JoAnna Fildes. Stephanie Scime also tallied for Amherst. Courtney Lusk and Baylee Hapeman tallied first-half goals for Albion. Amherst finished third in ECIC Division III with a 7-4-1 record and 9-9-1 record overall. Amherst closed out the regular season with some tough games. They went 2-2 in league games, losing to Starpoint, 2-0, and Pioneer, 3-1, and beating Cheektowaga, 7-0, and Maryvale, 5-0. In non-league games, Amherst held tough against Williamsville East, losing 3-0, and defeated Lancaster, 2-1. Amherst graduates only two seniors, Hurley and Ariella Korn. "Overall, it was a great season," said Fildes. "We have worked hard at achieving our goals and with only losing two seniors, our off-season training begins now for next fall." Sophomore Laura Caty led the team with 16 goals and two assists followed by junior Alison Rogers (10 goals, 14 assists), sophomore Stephanie Scime (six goals, three assists) and junior Abbie Gowen (three goals, five assists). Goalie Casey McGuire posted six shutouts. |
