Dr. John B. Sheffer, pathologist at UB's Medical School

Dr. John B. Sheffer, 85, of Williamsville, died on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007 at Canterbury Woods, Amherst.

Born in Youngsville, Pa., he graduated from Houghton College in 1943 and the University at Buffalo School of Medicine in 1947. He was a physician and officer in the U.S. Army, stationed at Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany.

Dr. Sheffer taught pathology at the UB School of Medicine for 47 years. He also served as chief of laboratory services at the Veterans Administration Hospital, was the chief of pathology at Deaconess Hospital and was on the staff of Sisters of Charity Hospital.

Dr. Sheffer was past president of the Houghton College Alumni Association and chairman of the board of Buffalo Christian Center. He was an active member of Randall Memorial Baptist Church in Amherst, serving on the Board of Deacons and the Mission's Board, teaching Sunday School, and singing in the choir.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; two sons, Samuel A. and John B. II, who was a past mayor of Williamsville, state assemblyman and state senator; one daughter, Deborah S. Alcott; three sisters, Lovedy McCleery, Prudence West and Oneita De- Vore; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Randall Memorial Baptist Church. Arrangements were made by the Beach-Tuyn Funeral Home.
