Arthritis Foundation of Upstate New York offers several classes

The Arthritis Foundation of Upstate New York Chapter is offering a "Taking Control of Arthritis" course.

The course is a three-session educational program designed to help people learn ways to take control and better manage their arthritis.

Each class is taught by trained Arthritis Foundation instructors. Attendees are asked to commit to all three classes. There is no cost to attend the sessions.

Topics that will be covered for this event include: how and which exercises help arthritis, pain management, communicating with the health care provider, medication, dealing with depression, relaxation and stress management, nutrition, problem solving and healthier lifestyle goal setting.

Classes will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays, Nov. 5, 12 and 19 at Slim and Tone, 55 CrossPoint Parkway, Getzville, at the corner of North French Road and Millersport Highway,

Classes will also take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays, Nov. 5, 12 and 19 at the Northeast YMCA, (Fitness Studio room), 4433 Main St., at Harlem Road, Snyder.

The foundation will also offer several exercise classes from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Nov. 13, 15, 27 and 28 and Dec. 4, 6, 11, 13 and 19 at Slim and Tone in Amherst.

When it comes to arthritis, even simple exercise can help reduce pain and stiffness.

The Arthritis Foundation program is designed to increase joint flexibility, improve range of motion and maintain muscle strength.

Call the Arthritis Foundation at 507-4543 to receive an exercise class registration form. Classes must have at least 12 participants. The cost is $24 for eight classes. Transplant Support Group

holds monthly meeting

The Transplant Support Group of Western New York will hold its monthly meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20 at the Cleveland Heights Christian Church hall, 4774 Union Road, Cheektowaga.

The program is titled "Paired Kidney Donation" and will feature Dr. Oleh Pankewycz, medical director of the Kaleida Health Multiorgan Transplant Center at Buffalo General Hospital.

Pankewycz will address the support group about kidney donation.

"If you have a potential donor who is not compatible with you due to mismatched blood type or other reasons, the living donor exchange

program can match two or more incompatible recipients and donor pair to enable successful living donation," Pankewycz.

Astellas Pharma will sponsor the meeting, and refreshments will be served.

The support group meetings are held the third Tuesday of every month at no charge.

Hospice Month

In recognition of November as National Hospice Month, Niagara Hospice will hold two Community Forums at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 8 in the Administration Building located at 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport.

The community is invited to attend either session that will include a question and answer period following a brief presentation.

Refreshments will be provided and Hospice staff will be on hand to answer questions. Immediately following the forum, attendees will be invited to tour the new Niagara Hospice House that is also located at the 4675 Sunset Drive Campus.
