• NEW HIRE - The Buffalo and
Erie County Historical Society has hired
Cynthia Van Ness as its new director of
library archives. Van Ness comes to the
Historical Society after 13 years with the
Buffalo and Erie County Public Library
system, where she was most recently a
librarian in the Grosvenor Room and
the Humanities and Social Sciences
depar tment.
• FREE ADMISSION - The
Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum is
offering free admission to all veterans,
current military personnel and their
families from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday,
Nov. 11 at 180 Thompson St., North
Tonawanda. There is free parking and it
is handicapped accessible.

• BOOK RELEASE - The North
Tonawanda History Museum has
received the first shipment of "North
Tonawanda: The Lumber City," its first
full-length book on the history of North
Tonawanda. All pre-purchased copies
have been distributed, mailed or being
held for pick up. The first order was
sold out before it arrived and second and
third orders have been placed. The book
is available through the museum for
$34.95 each, and for $38.95, it can be

• PLAY WRITING
COMPETITION -TheWriteToBe

Heard Student Playwriting Competition
is offering area students in grades 8
through 12 within a 60-mile radius of
Buffalo the opportunity to write a
one-act play and have a public
performance at Shea's Smith Theatre.
The winning playwright will:
• Receive a $1,000 scholarship from
the Laura L. Adams Foundation.
• Have his/her play performed at
Shea's Smith Theatre.
• Receive a staged reading of his/her
play at Barnes and Noble Booksellers in
Amherst.
• Be actively involved in the
production and rehearsal process.
Competition Guidelines
• Students must submit it themselves.
No counselors, teachers, parents and no
collaborations.

• Not previously produced.
• Must be an original one act. No
screenplays, adaptations or musicals.
• Must be received by the Jan. 7,
2008.
• Typed 12 point, double-spaced,
single sided.
• Number all pages and staple.
• Title page must have your name,
complete home mailing address and
phone number, e-mail address (if you have
one) sponsoring teacher's name and title,
school mailing address and phone number.
• Include a character list at the
beginning of the play.
• Three copies of each play. No
retur ns.
• Students can submit as many
original scripts as they want.
• 25 minutes or shorter preferred.

• The winning play becomes the
property of The Write to Be Heard.

• THE KENNY AWARDS - The
Lipke Foundation, Gibralter Industries
and Shea's Performing Arts Center are
seeking high school youth theater
productions in Erie, Niagara and
Chautauqua counties for The Kenny
Awards. The Kenny is awarded to a local
high school for Outstanding Musical
Production and includes a $5,000 grant
from the Lipke Foundation for the
theater department, a custom-made
shadow box filled with memorabilia and
bronze medallions for the entire cast,
crew and orchestra. Finalists will
perform a selection from their musical
on the Shea's stage as part of the

• FILM PROJECT - Spotlight on
Hope was awarded a film project
