Tigers win second game Hard work is finally paying off for the Amherst Central football team. The Tigers (2-6, 1-6) rushed for 251 yards and played aggressively on defense to earn a 14-0 shutout home victory last Friday over Pioneer. "I like how we've stuck together," said Amherst coach Patrick Murphy. "We haven't won them all but we sure have battled. No one has given up." They've also played tougher. "We've been a lot more physical the last couple of games," said Murphy. "Games are won or lost on the offensive and defensive lines. They're starting to grow up a little bit." Tigers' junior running back Bert Smith scored on the third play from scrimmage, taking a sweep 64 yards for the score. He added a 40-yard TD in the third quarter. Smith finished with 15 carries for 164 yards. Smith also intercepted a pass, as did seniors Dashawn Hough and Viron Hale. Senior strong safety Matt Weber once again led the Tigers' defense with 14 tackles and a sack. "He was told last year he was too small to play varsity, but he was MVP on the JV and is our leading tackler," said Murphy. Senior D.J. Filer added five tackles and two sacks. Senior Casey Rich chipped in 13 tackles; junior Dan Dixson recorded seven tackles. Junior Joe Kubek ran in a two-point conversion. Amherst hosts Newfane at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in a crossover game. It will be senior night. |
