South field to light up soon There will soon be working lights on the football field at Williamsville South. Williamsville Director of Athletics Jim Rusin said on Wednesday that the lights on the football field will be up and running sometime in November. A safety inspection in August showed sheared anchor bolts that hold up the light pole in the North end of the field that faces the scoreboard and directly behind the baseball dugout. Rusin said the sheared bolts were under a safety guard, which could have been only seen in a safety inspection. Rusin didn't know if weather from last year's October snowstorm or age (poles are at least 15 years) was the cause for the repair. On the side of caution, Rusin said all four light poles were taken down until they were fixed. "We couldn't play with one light pole down, and with all being around the same age, we made the decision to repair all of them so we wouldn't have to do this again," said Rusin. "The district did the right thing." No lights caused four night varsity football regular-season games, three for South (Lew-Port, week two, North, week four; and Starpoint, week eight) and one for Williamsville North (Jamestown, week one), to be moved to Saturday. North's home game with Jamestown was played at North High School. e-mail: pnagy@beenews.com |
