Knowing the risk factors - screenings for heart disease to be held at mall The number one cause of death in Western New York - cardiovascular disease - can be detected and prevented. The WNY region is considered the worst in the country for heart disease. New York is the worst rated state, with WNY reporting the highest number of deaths. To help those who are at risk, the Niagara Health Quality Coalition and AstraZeneca have organized a Heart Healthy Weekend for this weekend in which free cholesterol screenings will be administered. Blood pressures will also be tested. "It's an opportunity to get this screening that can often be expensive," said Bruce Boissonnault, president and CEO of Niagara Health Quality Coalition. "Everyone should know these numbers." Nurses will explain the good and bad cholesterol numbers on site during the event. Screenings will be offered from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 28 at the Boulevard Mall, 730 Alberta Drive, Amherst. Boissonnault said the event will be well staffed and the waits should be minimal. "We expect a lot of people to come through, and they will get their results then and there," he said, adding some will be advised to follow up with their doctor. Fasting is not required for this screening. "We are an area that is not as aware as we should be," he said. "What you don't know can hurt you. You need to know your numbers." Boissonnault added, the purpose of the screenings is to encourage residents to take an active role in their health. He said by understanding one's health and knowing what to ask can make the time with their doctor more effective. The two major risk factors for cardiovascular disease are high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol, according to the American Heart Association.
