Community News The Amherst Lions Club raised $500 for the Campaign SightFirst II, an international fundraising effort by the Lions to protect millions of people from blindness. The funds were raised through a garage sale held at the Trinity United Methodist Church. The Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation has funds available to schools and school districts operating in Erie County to purchase books used by students ages 5-13. The due date for the application is Oct. 31. For information, visit www.thetowerfoundation.org. Nichols School, located in Buffalo, has named the new members of the alumni board: President Hugh M. Russ III; Jane Arcadi of Hamburg; Michelle Rosenburg Parentis of Clarence Center; Wendy Lebowitz Pressman of East Amherst; W. Scott Saperston of Eggertsville; Craig Semple of Hamburg and David Tiftickjian of Amherst. The University at Buffalo has received a $750,000 grant from New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research to recruit Gottfried Strasser, an internationally known scientist in nanotechnology. He will have a joint appointment to the Department of Electrical Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Department of Physics in the College of Arts and Sciences. Kimberly Jarmusz of Williamsville, Lisa Le Cuyer of Getzville and Matthew Chavez of Amherst will appear in "Company," the first musical of Niagara University Theatre's 2007-08 season. The musical will preview at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8 and will continue at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9, 10, 15, 16 and Sunday, Nov. 17. Matinees will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 10 and 11, 17 and 18. Tickets are $19. Preview night tickets are $6. For more information, call 286-8329. Daniel Victoor of Williamsville will be one of the soloists during a fully staged production of Leonard Bernstein's "Mass: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players and Dancers," presented by Opera Sacra. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday Nov. 17 and at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18 at St. Joseph's University Church, 3275 Main St., Buffalo.
