East streaking into final regular season match
by PATRICK J. NAGY Reporter

Williamsville East heads into its final regular season match on Thursday with first place Clarence on a winning streak.

The Flames defeated Sweet Home, 312-321, Amherst, 295-306, and Williamsville South, 295-318, last week at Transit Valley Country Club to improve its record to 7-2.

East had a different medalist in each match. Senior Justin Cardon shot a 36 versus Sweet Home; freshman Sean Mahon fired a 38 against Amherst; and Bill Gaffney had a 38 versus South.

Other top scores for the Flames last week were Mahon (43) and senior Mark Chaskes (44) against Sweet Home; Cardon and seniors Adam Burtch and Dave Rundell (40) versus Amherst; and Cardon (40), Rundell (41) and Mahon (42) against South.

Sweet Home was consistent, led by 43s by junior Dave Sykes, sophomore Damien Annas and junior Brett Guynn. Amherst had three golfers shoot a 42 or lower - seniors Mike Hong (42), and senior Marty Jeras and sophomore Will Pelham (41 each).

A 43 from sophomore Rob Munley and 44s by sophomores P.J. Klock and Clark Zhang, and junior Taylor Gesel paced the Billies.

Although Clarence has already locked up first place in the ECIC North Large School Division, East coach Dave Delisanti said Thursday's match is going to mean a lot for the seniors.

"It gives us a chance to end the season on a positive note," said Delisanti.

The match starts at 3:30 p.m. at Transit Valley.

Cardon, Mahon, Chaskes, Gaffney and Josh DiMarco are in consideration for Monday's ECIC Championships at the Diamond Hawk Golf Course in Cheektowaga. Tee time is 9 a.m. The ECICs are a qualifier for the Section VI Championships next May.

Williamsville South

Besides losing to East, the Billies dropped a 295-334 match with Clarence last Wednesday at Brookfield Country Club.

Five of Clarence's golfers shot as good as South's lowest golfer. Clarence's Jake Dalton shot a 39 followed by Tim Seel (40), and Pat Sheedy, Charles Eckert and Joe Freitas (42 each).

Senior John Winstel led South with a 42. Munley and junior Greg Frank chipped in a 43 and 46, respectively.

South (0-8) looks for its elusive first win this week. They played Amherst at Park Country Club on Tuesday and travel to Brighton Golf Course at 4 p.m. on Thursday to face Sweet Home.

"I've seen a lot of progress," said South coach Al Monaco. "We're so young. Winstel is our only senior. I think we'll be real good in a year or two."

Monaco said Winstel and Munley have qualified for ECICs.
