South wins, loses, ties Williamsville South's varsity field hockey team has recently experienced every conceivable way of finishing a game. The Lady Billies beat Pioneer, 1-0, on Sept. 24, tied Orchard Park, 1-1 in overtime, on Sept. 26 and lost to Sweet Home, 3-0, on Sept. 28. Last Monday, South dropped a 3-2 game at Starpoint and closed out the week with a 2-0 loss last Wednesday to Williamsville North. The Pioneer game was scoreless at halftime, although both teams had scoring opportunities, said coach Mary Ferenczy. With 45 seconds remaining in regulation, Ali Ferenczy sent a pass to Lauren Falzone to score the only goal of the game and steal a road win. Megan Hull recorded the shutout. "It was a great team effort," said coach Ferenczy. South got on the scoreboard first in its home game versus Orchard Park when Ashley Ferenczy scored on a corner situation with 13:06 left in the first half. Ali Ferenczy recorded the assist. The Lady Billies allowed Orchard Park back in the game before halftime with a goal by Bridget McNulty with 4:45 remaining. "Both teams rallied in the second half and in the seven-on-seven overtime session, the game remained tied at 1-1," said coach Ferenczy. Sweet Home scored three of its four goals in the first half. Lauren Korniczky scored 8:07 into the game. Katie Mazuchowski scored to give the Lady Panthers a 3-0 lead. The Starpoint and North games had connections to the Ferenczy family. Starpoint coach Barb Kreuzer is the aunt of Ashley and Alison Ferenczy and sister of coach Mary Ferenczy. Alison and Ali's father, Steve, is the Athletics Director at North. Ashley Ferenczy jump started the Starpoint game by scoring one minute in. Shannon Martin was credited with the assist. Starpoint rallied back with an amazing shot on a corner to tie the game. Seconds before halftime, Starpoint scored take a 2-1 halftime lead. Two minutes into the second half, Ali Ferenczy shot and Falzone tipped it in to tie the game at 2-2. At the 17:03 mark Starpoint had another corner and Allyson Zurawski powered another shot that proved to be the game winner. Emily O'Gorman scored to put North up 1-0 at halftime. South rallied at halftime to continue to rally but minutes into the second half, O'Gorman scored again. The Billies fought hard with Hull making some amazing saves in the second half. Hull made nine saves in the second half. "She kept us in the game," said coach Ferenczy. The team continued to fight and with 58 seconds remaining in the game, Falzone scored off a corner situation. Darragh Kerr had the assist. |
