Turnovers cost Amherst against WS East If the goal line of a football field was at the 30-yard line instead of the end zone, then the Amherst football team would have won at West Seneca East last Friday by at least 30 points. Instead, the Tigers committed four turnovers (interception, three fumbles) inside the West Seneca East 30 and lost 7-0. "We have to take advantage of our opportunities and can't put the ball on the ground," said Amherst coach Patrick Murphy. "It allows other teams to get into the game. I thought we should have won that game by several touchdowns." Murphy said his team took the opening drive 65 yards down the field to the West Seneca East 15 and fumbled. Amherst also fumbled at the Trojan 12 later in the game. Junior running back Bert Smith (21 rushes, 86 yards) fumbled twice. Junior quarterback Kevin Denny, who left the game in the second quarter with a bruised shoulder, fumbled once. Denny's replacement, junior Joe Kubek, threw an interception with 57 seconds remaining in the game as the team was driving in West Seneca East territory. "I felt like if we scored early, we could have put the game away quickly," said Murphy. "But we didn't, and West Seneca East gained confidence. It's part of the maturing process with a young team.
