Amherst residents honored

Two Amherst residents will be honored by their high schools' Hall of Fame when they are installed by the Bishop Fallon/Holy Angels Collegiate Institute Alumni Associations.

Dr. Joseph A. La Nasa, dental practitioner in Amherst, and Dr. Daniel P. Starr, an athletic director at Canisius College, will be inducted on Friday, Oct. 19.

The following Saturday, plaques bearing the men's likenesses will be mounted at Holy Angels Church.

La Nasa and Starr are being honored for their longevity and prominence in their chosen fields, charity, service to the country and community and upholding the ideals of the Oblates - a layperson dedicated to religious life.

La Nasa is a 1949 graduate of Holy Angels Collegiate Institute, a 1953 graduate of Canisius College and is a 50-year graduate of the University at Buffalo School of Dentistry.

He is a communicant of St. Leo the Great Church, received the Dr. Ed Doran Award from the Catholic Charities for exemplary service in 1993, was Man of the Year in 1999 for the Erie County Dental Society, was given the honorary Distinguished Alumnus Award from Erie Community College for 2007, and is past-president and permanent treasurer of the Guild of St. Apollonia Catholic Dentists.

Starr is a 1953 graduate of Bishop Fallon High School and a 1959 graduate of Canisius College. He received his master's and doctorate degrees from Rutgers University.

He was a faculty member at Canisius for 45 years and was director of athletics for 26 years. He is a member of the Canisius College Athletic Hall of Fame and a professor emeritus of sports history at Canisius.

He was a starting end on Bishop Fallon's first football team. He is a distinguished alumnus of the Eastern College Athletic Association.
