Williamsville South's girls tennis team remains in third place behind Starpoint and Amherst by winning two matches and losing one.
The Lady Billies faced Amherst on Sept. 24 and only managed to get one point, losing 4-1. Stephanie Berland, South's second singles player, ran her record to 5-1 in division matches with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Amherst's Daisy Timlin. Sophomore Ellen Meyers lost her only match in division play, losing to Amherst's Liz Greco in three sets.
South came back strong two days later, beating Cheektowaga, 4-1.
"The match was much closer than the score showed," said South coach Richard Phillips
South's third singles player, Katie Dukarm, was steady enough to outlast Cheektowaga's Lisa Janek, 7-6, 7-5. Both doubles points went to three sets with the South team of Katy Falleta and Joanna Ostroot winning 6-1, 6-4 after losing the first set, 3-6. The South team of Lydia Seidler and Jessica Lawson lost 3-6, 3-6 after winning the first set, 6-3.
South closed out last week with a 4-1 win at Depew to improve to 5-3. South won all three singles matches. At one point, the match was in jeopardy when Depew's Stephanie Bravo won the second set from Dukarm, and Depew split sets with the first doubles team of Justine Duquette and Falleta. Shortly afterward, South's second doubles team of Ostroot and Seidler clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
This Friday, Meyers and Berland will participate in the ECIC singles tournament at the Village Glen.
