The Williamsville South girls' cross country team continued its streak of impressive performances, along with steady improvement by the boys' team.

On Tuesday, Sept. 25, the Lady Billies ran to an 18-44 victory over Williamsville East. Sophomore Amanda Breymeier won for the second time this season, mastering the difficult Bassett Park course in a time of 22:26, leading South to nine of the first 12 places of the race. Colleen Hurtubise (second), M.C. Aungst (fourth), Maxine Meyerhofer (fifth), Laura Johnston (sixth), Rachel Zucker (ninth), Santana Coon (11th), and Gretchen Szal (12th) also placed.

The South boys beat East for the first time in many years, 24-35, led by Dave Quinlan's second-place finish. The Billies placed seven runners in the top 10 - John Stark (third), Mike Herr (fifth), Leo Schultz (sixth), Bruce Hibler (eighth), Chris Bowers (ninth), and Jake Vogan (tenth).

On Saturday, the teams competed in the McQuaid Invitational at Genesee Valley State Park in Rochester. The highlight of the day was the sophomore girls' race which finished ninth out of 46 teams. Breymeier once again led the way with a fifth place finish, the highest ever for a South girls in the race. Aungst (50th), Meyerhofer (83rd), Jenny Mooney (95th), Zucker (133rd), and Coon (181st) rounded out South's scoring. The team ran the upper class members in the unseeded varsity race. Hurtubise finished 181st, Johnston came 261st, and Lauren Mosier was 265th.

The boys finished 24th of 36 teams in the sophomore boys' race, led by the 96th place finish of Mike Herr. Hibler, Bowers, Vogan, and Rob Freeman finished the scoring for South. Quinlan and Stark finished 64th and 87th for the boys in the unseeded varsity race.

South raced Pioneer and Iroquois on Tuesday at Sprague Brook Park but results were unavailable before The Bee went to press. South will compete in the Town of Amherst Championship Friday at Sweet Home.
