Amherst's girls tennis team is one win away from locking up a share of the ECIC Division III crown.

The Lady Tigers, 8-1 in league play, 9-3 overall, need to beat Maryvale at home on Wednesday to create a tie with Starpoint for divisional top honors.

Amherst split its matches with Starpoint, losing 3-2 on Sept. 17 but winning 3-2 on Friday.

Amherst got points at first doubles (juniors Katherine Janicki and Theresa Gladysz, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3), second doubles (senior Jordan Zloty and junior Anna Gudza, 6-1, 6-1) and third singles (senior Kerry Rois, 6-2, 6-2).

Janicki and Gladysz's only loss has been to Depew but the duo rebounded with a win over the Lady Wildcats last Wednesday.

Rois is 6-2 as is Liz Greco at first singles. Daisy Timlin is 4-4 at second singles.

Amherst has also defeated Williamsville South, 3-2 and 4-1, Depew, 3-2 and 4-0, and Cheektowaga, 5-0 and 5-0 and Maryvale, 5-0, in league matches.

Amherst coach Eric Damiani credits hard work in practice plus team depth for the team's success.

"The kids haven't hit a plateau," said Damiani. "They've improved every single match and are only getting better."

The ECIC singles tournament is Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Village Glen in Williamsville.
