South improves to 3-1

Williamsville South's varsity girls swimming team is off to a 3-1 start.

The Lady Billies defeated Pioneer, 62-36, in the home opener of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 18, Maryvale, 59-35, at home last Tuesday and at Lake Shore, 116-54, last Thursday.

Against Pioneer, sophomores Erin Rogers (200 and 500-yard freestyle) and Alaina Laszewski (IM, 100 butterfly) placed first place in both of their events.

Junior Jenny Rogers placed first in the 60 free and 100 backstroke. Senior Jackie Jordan finished second in the 60 free and first in the 100 free. Freshman Bridget Dix swam strong to place second in the 100 fly and 100 breaststroke.

"It was the best meet I've coached in years," said South coach Rick Grampp. "Every swimmer put their best effort into every single event."

With victories in all three relays, South beat Maryvale. Capturing first place swims were Rogers (IM, 100 free), Rogers (60 free, 100 fly), and Laszewski (200, 500 free). Also contributing strong in second place events were Jordan (100 back), Kate Mikoley (200, 500 free) and Dix (60 free, 100 breast).

Swimming past Lake Shore for first place finishes were Rogers (200 free, 100 fly), Rogers (200 IM, 100 back), Laszewski (50, 100 free) and Jordan (500 free). Senior Julie Cummings placed second in the 200 free; Dix took second in the 500 free. Strong performances by Mikoley, Jessica Gordon and Lindsay Darling contributed to the high point score.

South lost a disappointing but competitive meet against Cheektowaga on Friday, Sept. 21, 97-79. Rogers (50 free, 100 back) and Laszewski (IM) took home first place honors.

South swam Iroquois on Tuesday, Oct. 2 but results were unavailable before press time.
