Lady Tigers tame Cheektowaga, even record Amherst's varsity girls swimming won an exciting home meet versus Cheektowaga, 94-86, on Tuesday, Sept. 25. The Lady Tigers improved its record to 1-1. Michelle Niblock and Eva Lankes were double winners in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly and the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, respectively. Both swimmers qualified for the Section VI Championships in each of their events. "These swimmers really stepped up to the plate," stated Amherst coach Kim Skomra. "We knew Cheektowaga had some strong swimmers and our girls used that as motivation to swim fast times." Kaelyn Sullivan won the 50 free in a sectional qualifying time and qualified for ECICs in the 100 breast. Sarah Masters won diving in a sectional qualifying score. Amherst also had personal-best swims from ECIC qualifiers Emily Call and Kristin Scaringi (200, 500 free), Charlotte Drozda (200 IM, 100 fly), Emilie Byrd (50, 100 free), Larissa Kumm, Jen Burke, Julia Buscsglia and Miranda Jacobi (100 back). "These girls had to swim their best to outscore Cheektowaga," said coach Deb Sullivan. "They were up for the challenge and it paid off for us." "Our 200 medley and 200 free relays continued to look strong," added Skomra. "We are confident the 200 medley and 200 free relay teams of Lankes, Sullivan, Niblock, and Poleon can compete with anyone in the conference." |
