Grantmakers workshop to focus on storytelling

The Western New York Grantmakers Association will present the fourth annual Grantmakers Association and Grantseekers Conference from 7:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6 at the University Inn Conference Center, 2402 N. Forest Road, Amherst.

"They may listen, but will they care?" will feature public speaker and communications expert Andy Goodman.

"Telling stories helps us understand ourselves, bond with friends and enter larger communities, but as professionals we tend to relegate storytelling to a place outside of work," said Goodman. "If your goal is to educate, persuade or simply connect with your audience, storytelling is the single most powerful communication tool available to you."

Goodman's workshop will nmake a case for storytelling based on five questions:

  • What are the four factors that make narrative the most powerful form of human communication?

  • How do stories compare with data for convincing an audience?

  • What are the key elements of a well-crafted story?

  • How can you use stories to advance your work on a day-to-day basis?

  • How can you build a storytelling culture in your organization so that everyone will use this tool effectively?

The workshop is limited to the first 100 individuals who register by Oct. 23.

Paid registrants will receive a short preworkshop assignment via E-mail to complete and bring to the workshop.

Registration fee for the workshop is $40.

To register, mail the fee with name, E-mail, organization, phone number and address to Western New York Grantmakers Association, 712 Main St., Buffalo, NY 14202.
