High schooler's book sale raises funds for city mission The third annual book sale to benefit the Buffalo City Mission will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7 at the Boulevard Mall, 730 Alberta Drive, Amherst. The Boulevard Mall is a new location for the sale. Book sale founder, Amherst resident and Canisius High School junior Jake Moy said that the larger venue will hopefully increase interest in the sale. "We have pretty much anything you can think of," Moy said. Moy, with his brother Chris, 18, who is in his freshman year at Colgate University, started the sale three years ago as a way to give back to the community - literally and symbolically. "We wanted to do some sort of community service because our school really stresses that," Moy said. "We're selling books for money to donate but books are also a symbol of knowledge." Moy noted that being able to donate the money - $1,500 every year since the sale began - is not the only rewarding thing about the sale. "It makes more reading available at a low cost," he said. Books, starting at 50 cents, will be sold. Donations are still being accepted. "We sent out postcards to neighbors, family and friends," Moy said. "Crazy for Books in Hamburg donated a ton of books and Nardin Academy had a dress down day to gather books, so we have a lot." All donations are tax deductible. No textbooks, magazines or "Reader's Digests." For more information on the sale or to drop off books, call 812-9936. |
