Be ready, be prepared and 'Storm the Mall'
Bee Editorial
There's little doubt that with the one-year anniversary of the surprise October Storm right around the corner, Western New Yorkers won't be able to go to the corner coffee shop without overhearing reminiscent stories of how long the power was out, how far

so and so" drove for a generator or what kind of damage a neighbor sustained due to falling tree limbs.

Yes, the anniversary of the storm will surely bring dramatic local television specials with "a look back" or "one year later - the aftermath." But we would like to remind residents that as you sip your coffee and recall how you spent an entire week helping your neighbors saw what was left of their trees into pieces, that a similar situation could happen again.

So, are you ready? If not, the Eastern Hills Mall, the American Red Cross - Greater Buffalo Chapter and First Niagara Bank are helping residents get ready, become prepared, and be educated on what to do and what to have on hand in the event of an emergency. Whether that emergency is as great as the October Storm or as minor as a flicker in the living room lights, the "Storm the Mall" event is focused on making you proactive in the event of an emergency.

According to mall officials, the family-oriented event will not only commemorate the 2006 October Storm but will also help families become better prepared for future disasters that may occur in our communities. Children and their parents can learn relevant safety tips, participate in fun activities, view entertainment and win prizes.

The event will also remind residents to update their current safety plans.

Judith A. Rucki, director of communications for the American Red Cross - Greater Buffalo Chapter, noted that many Western New Yorkers purchased products such as generators and heavy-duty flashlights but have yet to run them or fill them with batteries.

"People tend to prepare for a disaster after it has hit," she said.

With "Storm the Mall," there is a chance for all Western New Yorkers to learn beneficial safety measures, receive special discounts on safety products and teach children what to do in the event of an emergency.

We urge all Clarence residents to take advantage of this great event that is literally in your own back yard.

"Storm the Mall" will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m Saturday, Oct. 6 at the mall, 4545 Transit Road, near Main Street.
