Girls tennis

At the halfway mark of the high school girls tennis season, Williamsville South finds itself in third place in ECIC Division III with a 3-2 record.

South opened its season at Amherst on Wednesday, Sept. 12 and lost 3-2 despite captains Ellen Meyers and Stephannie Berland's wins at first and second singles, respectively. South defeated Cheektowaga on Friday, Sept. 14 to bring its record to 1-1.

The most exciting match of the year was its home opener against Depew on Monday, Sept. 17.

Meyers staked the Billies to a 1-0 with a quick 6-0, 6-1 win at first singles. Berland quickly followed at second singles with identical scores to make it 2-0 South.

Depew bounced back with a victory at second doubles, defeating South's team of Joanna Ostroot and Lydia Seidler to make the score 2-1 South.

Minutes after the loss at second doubles, South's third singles, Katie Dukarm won her first set in a tiebreaker, 17-15.

The first doubles team of Justine Duquette and Katy Falleta split sets with Depew shortly afterwards and headed into a deciding set.

Despite improved play, Depew won the third set at first doubles, evening the score at 2-2. However, Dukarm held on to win 6-3 in the second set to assure the 3-2 South victory.

Last Wednesday, South hosted Maryvale and won 5-0.

On Friday, South journeyed to undefeated Starpoint where they lost, 4-1. Meyers remained undefeated at first singles with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Starpoint's Jenna Maldiner.
