Sweet Home's Gutowski sets records

Sweet Home sophomore Paige Gutowski broke a 25-year old pool record on Sept. 18 at Lancaster in the 200 individual medley. She swam 2:15.62, breaking the previous record of 2:16.06 held by Erin Hurley.

On Friday, Gutowski broke the Sweet Home record in the 200 free in 1:59.21. The previous record of 1:59.66 was held by Bethany Fried since 2005.

Sweet Home beat Lancaster, 102-93, and Hamburg, 97-82.

Junior Kaitlin Mergler and senior Sarah Mazuchowski are both undefeated this year. Mergler was on the 200 and 400 free relays last year that broke school records; Mazuchowski was on the 400 free relay.

In other high school swimming news: Williamsville East opened its 2007 season road wins over Cheektowaga, 121-62, on Sept. 18 and Maryvale, 64-29, on Friday.

Senior Tori Mayer was a double winner against Cheektowaga, winning the 200 free (2:05.43) and 100 butterfly (1:05.27). Other winners included seniors Kelsey Bradbury (200 IM, 2:26.65) and Janelle Munroe (500 free, 5:24.26).

Bradbury (100 fly, 1:08.27) and juniors Britany O'Dea (500 free, 5:46.57) and Kristen Ostanski (100 breast, 1:16.57) posted good times versus Maryvale.

East hosted Lake Shore on Tuesday but the result was unavailable before The Bee went to press. They swims at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Iroquois.

East returns to their home pool, Transit Middle School, at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 2 against West Seneca East.
