Kickball tournament at Amherst High School to benefit Roswell

Mazikowski
The third annual Roger Mazikowski Memorial Kick for a Cure - a kickball tournament and family event - will be held Saturday.

Emily Mazikowski and her family, with the support of the Amherst Central School District, will come together for three kickball games. The championship team takes bragging rights, but the true winner is the Leukemia Research Foundation at Roswell.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used for researching vaccinations for infectious diseases. Roger Mazikowski, who battled leukemia, passed away in March 2006 from complications of pneumonia.

Emily, Roger's wife, founded the Kick for a Cure event three years ago to support cancer research. This year more family friendly events have been added.

Doors open at noon Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Amherst High School athletic field, 4301 Main St. Kickball games begin at 1 p.m.

Three games will be played and the four teams are: the Mazikowski family, a student team, high school/middle school teachers and Smallwood/ Windermere teachers. The two winners of the semi-finals will play in the championship game.

The event also offers food, raffles and entertainment, including a bounce house, dunk tank with teachers as the "targets," face painting, magician and a silent auction. Eggertsville Fire Company will also be making an appearance with a fire truck.

Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children and students and $12 for a family of four or more.

Last year's event raised $6,000. To donate, e-mail emilymaz@msn.com or send donations to 276 Sherbrooke Road, Williamsville, N.Y. 14221.

Donations for the silent auction are also needed. Businesses interested in making a donation can also e-mail Emily. Donations can be made to: AMS Kick for a Cure.

Mr. Mazikowski was a teacher at Amherst Middle School.
