North football goes back to basics
Spartans grind out 280 rushing yards, post first win

      A simplified game plan combined with a ton of rushing yards led Williamsville North to its first victory of the season. The Spartans gained 280 yards rushing and only threw six times in a 34-21 non-league win at rival Williamsville South last Thursday.

Smith races Amherst past East
Tigers' back breaks single-game school rushing record

      An unbelievable performance by Bert Smith lifted the Amherst Central varsity football team to its first victory of the season. The Amherst junior had 463 all-purpose yards, including a school-record 334 yards, as the Tigers beat Williamsville East, 32-21, last Thursday at East.

      The Buffalo Bills offense has enough trouble to work through with starting quarterback J.P. Losman on the shelf with a sprained knee, rookie Trent Edwards taking the reins probably before he's ready, and a passing game that hasn't gotten out of first gear through three games this season.

      East Amherst resident and Williamsville East graduate Jason Tartick was named Geneseo State College's male student-athlete of the week for Sept. 17 to 23. Tartick, a sophomore business administration major, scored a goal and an assist in the 4-0 victory over Potsdam on Saturday.

      Sweet Home is 4-0 but its 28-14 home win over Kenmore East last Saturday was the team's most complete victory. "It was the first game where we got control and kept it," said Sweet Home coach John Faller. "But I don't think we've played our best game yet.

Youthful South improving

      After dropping its first two games, Williamsville South has been on a mini-roll. The Lady Billies have won two out of three games to improve its record to 2-2 in ECIC Division II, 2-3 overall. South's latest win was a thrilling 1-0 double overtime victory at West Seneca East last Wednesday.

      Bill Truman, Barbara Gallo and Jane Kaeppel each sank a hole in one at Audubon Golf Course. Truman used a 5-iron on the 177-yard third hole; Gallo had an 8-iron on the 90-yard sixth hole; Kaeppel utilized a 7-iron on the 90-yard ninth hole.

      A slow start in the quarterfinals led Sweet Home out of its own girls volleyball tournament last Saturday. The Lady Panthers, who took second last year, trailed Clarence, 13-7, and would up losing, 30-27, in the gold division quarterfinals. Sweet Home finished sixth overall.
