South boys golf gains experience

Williamsville South opened its 2007 boys golf season with losses to Williamsville East, 283-330, and Williamsville North, 316-330, last Monday and Tuesday but Billies coach Al Monaco saw improvement.

"We gained some experience," said Monaco. "Against East, we had two kids playing their first competitive match (Evan Martone, Trevor Simonick)."

Monaco said while his team scored the same amount of points in both matches, the North match at Westwood Country Club was played in a steady 20 to 30 mile per hour wind with higher gusts.

Sophomore Rob Munley tied North senior EJ Kiebler as co-medalists with a 42.

South sophomore P.J. Klocke shot a 45.

Dan O'Connor (43), Matt Sweeney (44) and Alex Ulrich (45) were other top scores for North.

The East match was held at the Country Club of Buffalo. Senior John Winstel was a medalist with a 44. Munley, Clark Zhang and Greg Frank all shot 47.

Billy Gaffney and Sean Mahon shot 37 and 38, respectively, to lead East.

South played Sweet Home on Tuesday and faces Amherst on Thursday. Both matches will be held at Audubon Golf Course.
