Sweet Home posts first win

Sweet Home's varsity boys soccer team is no longer without a victory.

The Panthers beat Lake Shore, 6-2, last Friday.

Nick Cavalieri and Johnny Reeb led the scoring with three and two goals, respectively. Matt Cuddihy finished off the scoring by driving a header to the back post off of a corner. Craig Stallard, Mamane Hamza and Tim Arnold all added assists.

The win followed an 8-0 loss to Williamsville East last Wednesday.

"All in all, this was a much better effort than Wednesday," said Sweet Home coach Scott Martin. "We played very well for about eighty of the ninety minutes. We had a lapse in the first half which allowed Lake Shore to gain some confidence and put a few in, but as we gain experience, our guys will begin to understand the importance of keeping the momentum once you have it."

The East game was scoreless 20 minutes in but East would score two goals and capitalize on a penalty kick to take a 3-0 lead into halftime. Martin said his team came out flat to start the second half and got what they deserved - five East goals.

"When you're playing one of the top teams in the area, you can't afford to take a few minutes off or else the ball will be in the back of your net," said Martin. "Needless to say, as a team we still have trouble understanding how to put together a full 90 minutes."

Sweet Home opened the week with a 2-1 loss last Monday to Frontier. The game was tied at 1-1 at halftime thanks to a great goal by Cavalieri. Martin said his team controlled the majority of the play, outshooting Frontier, 8-1, but their only shot went in.

This week, Sweet Home travels to top-ranked Hamburg and to Iroquois.
