It's been seven long years, but Williamsville South has finally ended its losing streak against Williamsville East.
The Billies' Yahs Williams blocked a 31-yard field goal attempt by Joe O'Gorman with 3.8 seconds left to preserve South's 15-14 win over the Flames last Saturday at East. It was South's first victory over East since 2000 and the first win of any Williamsville football team this season.
"It was awesome," said South coach Kraig Kurzanski. "We talked to the kids all week about how a Williamsville school hadn't had a win in football this year and that we could possibly be the first one to get it. We also talked about how we were playing both Williamsville schools within a 10-day period (South plays Williamsville North this Thursday) and that was great incentive for the kids. It was a great win. We had seniors on the team who had never beaten East."
"It was a heartbreaker," added East coach Henry Fumerelle. "After last week's loss to Starpoint (22-17) and this one being our crosstown rival, it hurts."
Williams shot through the left side of the East field goal unit team for the field goal block.
"He does everything you ask him to do," said Kurzanski. "Who better to block a kick than someone who comes to practice every day and gives their best?"
The blocked field goal was one of several East special team miscues, one of its team strengths coming into the game. An attempted 52-yard field goal try from O'Gorman was short with two minutes remaining. A 37-yard attempt in the first quarter sailed right after a high snap.
An extra point attempt on East's second TD, a three-yard bootleg by Flames quarterback Zach Stubbendeck in the fourth quarter, failed, giving East a 14-8 lead. South quarterback Chris Hauser, filling in for Dae-shaune Clark who left in the third quarter with a pulled hamstring, fired a 20-yard TD to Tim Krempa that tied the game. Zach Murray kicked the extra point to put South in the lead, 15-14.
"One of our strengths is our special teams," said Fumerelle. "We put ourselves in an opportunity to put one of the strongest parts of the team in a position to win the game, and we didn't do it."
After East's second missed field goal, the South offense took over with 1:51 remaining but was forced to punt with 58 seconds left. East began at its own 20-yard line and drove down to the South 12-yard line. Stubbendeck spiked the ball with 3.8 seconds, setting up the field goal attempt.
South went 62 yards on the opening drive of the game and scored, courtesy of a 20-yard run by Clark. Clark threw the two-point conversion to Arman Wood to make it 8-0. Wood later left the game with a pulled hamstring.
East answered with a 77-yard scoring drive, capped off by a one-yard QB keeper by Stubbendeck.. Stubbendeck ran in the two-point conversion.
East finished with 309 yards of total offense. Mike Silvestri rushed 31 times for 209 yards. East rushed for 269 yards as a team.
South had 260 yards of offense. Clark rushed for 81 yards on 12 carries and completed 5 of 12 passes for 78 yards before leaving the game. Hauser was 3 of 5 for 71 yards and rushed three times for 21 yards. Krempa had two catches for 42 yards.
Defensively, Max Cohen led East with nine tackles. Sophomore middle linebacker Will Kelly had seven tackles. Silvestri had an interception. Tyler Durinka recovered a fumble.
Josh Burke led South with 11 tackles. Anthony Erbacher added nine tackles. Krempa had an interception; Denell Lester recovered a fumble.
East (0-3) and South (1-2) stay in the Town of Amherst this week with Thursday afternoon games. The Flames host Amherst (0-3) and South hosts Williamsville North (0-3). Both are 4:30 p.m. starts.
