South cross country continues success The Williamsville South cross country teams continued their improvement by competing at the 13th West Seneca Invitational on Saturday. The South girls' team finished an impressive fifth out of 10 teams in the large school girls' race. West Seneca West won the race followed by Section V's Our Lady of Mercy and Pittsford Sutherland, and Amherst. Amanda Breymeier led South with a seventh place finish. M.C. Aungst (21st), Jenny Mooney (34th), returning team MVP Maxine Meyerhofer (39th), returning team captain Colleen Hurtubise (44th), Laura Johnston (46th), and Lauren Mosier (53rd) also ran. The South boys finished seventh out of 10, despite losing leading runner Alex Podvezko to an injury before the meet. Dave Quinlan (16th), Mike Herr (38th), John Stark (39th), Russ Schiess (41st), Bruce Hibler (45th), Chris Bowers (53rd), and Jake Vogan (54th) also competed. The JV girls' team also had a big day, finishing fourth out of 10 teams, led by Rachel Zucker, Gretchen Szal, Santana Coon, Allison Schubert, Rachelle Moyer, and Maggie Kreuz. The boys JV was incomplete, but was led by Robert and William Freeman and Brian McAvoy. South opened its season on Sept. 8 at the Byron-Bergen Invitational at Section V's Byron Bergen High School with good results. The girls' team finished seventh out of 14 teams, five of whom were from Section V, while the boys' team finished 11th out of 14 teams. The girls were led by Breymeier (28th, 21:54), Hurtubise (41st, 22:32) and Meyerhofer (49th, 23:01). Aungst was 54th, Mooney was 56th, rookie Rebecca Emo was 79th, and Johnston was 102nd to round out the scoring. Zucker Szal, Coon, and Kreuz also ran well. Podvezko led the boys, finishing 37th in 18:45. Quinlan was 53rd in 19:25, and Stark was 60th in 19:58. Herr, Schiess, Hibler, and Bowers finished out the scoring by finishing 67th, 75th, 78th, and 85th. South coaches Sam Hasan and Coach Godfrey were happy with the teams' performances and are looking forward to a successful season by both groups. |
