Three veterans of running high school cross country meets will pace Williamsville East this fall.

Senior tri-captains Matt Pawlicki, Andy MacDonald and Zinan Cheng should be three of the team's top seven runners, said East coach Kurt Holme.

"They're all outstanding leaders and physically tough runners," added Holme.

All three have run varsity for at least three years. MacDonald had the best finish out of the three at least year's Section VI Championships, finishing 23rd in Class A. MacDonald is the team's top runner this season.

Pawlicki is a well-rounded student athlete, as he is also student council president.

"He's as valuable as anyone on the team, not only for us but to the school community as well," Holme added.

Other runners fitting into the top seven are juniors Max Fogel and Scott Ryan.

Holme said he's looking to see who will fill the team's sixth man spot now. It be could junior newcomer Pat Gillick.

Holme expects to see personal improvements from third-year runner Charlie Russo.

Holme hopes for an above .500 record, but early injuries are casting a shadow on the season.

"We're hoping to get past the injuries and have a good year," said Holme.

East finished 3-3 last year.

Williamsville South

Coach Chuck Godfrey is fielding his strongest boys cross country team in years. Godfrey returns seniors Alex Podvezko and Dave Quinlan, junior John Stark and sophomore William Freeman.

Podvezko is the team captain and returns for his third year; Quinlan has run since he was a freshman. Quinlan was South's top finisher at last year's Section VI Championships.

Godfrey said Podvezko and Quinlan will be the team's top two runners. Stark will be somewhere in the starting lineup.

"Podvezko and Quinlan are probably as good as (Paul) Mangold was last year," said Godfrey.

Stark looks stronger. We're going to be a competitive team."

Mangold was the team's top runner last year. He attends Ohio State University.

New to the team are freshmen Mike Herr, Brian McAvoy, Robert Freeman and Jake Vogan, and sophomores Chris Bowers, Bruce Hibler and Leo Schultz.

Godfrey said many of his runners have benefited from the offseason work over the summer with new South girls coach Sam Hasan. Hasan began a Speed Elite Sports Performance Club, which added several runners to the South boys and girls teams.

"You can really tell the difference," said Godfrey. "The kids came in stronger than in the past so we were able to have harder workouts right from the beginning."

Dan Syracuse will serve as a volunteer coach.

South opened its season competing in the West Seneca Invitational. The Billies finished seventh out of nine teams in the boys large school division.

South participated in the Don Hall Memorial Invitational on Tuesday, but results were unavailable before The Bee went to press.

Sweet Home Despite losing New York State qualifiers Jacob Hagen and Ryan Poley to graduation, Panthers coach Mike Lauria describes the 2007 season as promising.

Lauria returns senior captain Mike Bakowski and junior Isaac Hagen.

"Both have been training very hard over the summer to get into competitive form," said Lauria.

Lauria said, most of the other runners on the team are new but he is looking for them to be competitive.

Lauria said his team goals are for his runners to improve at every meet.

Sweet Home finished 9-5 last year and took second place in Division I at ECICs.

Lauria said Hamburg and Clarence will be the team's toughest competition this season.
