Amherst boys fielding most gymnasts ever
by PATRICK J. NAGY Reporter

Last year, Amherst boys gymnastics coach Renee Kowalski was concerned she wouldn't be able to field a team. This year she will have no problem.

Kowalski is fielding a team record 10 gymnasts for the 2007 season, twice as many as last year.

"It's great because not all of them are seniors. I'll have some come back next year," said Kowalski. "A lot of them are taking lessons at Stumpf's so that should help."

Kowalski returns three gymnasts and debuts seven others, so she wasn't sure at press time what the starting lineup will be.

Returning gymnasts include senior captain Jordan Simone, sophomore assistant captain Mike Huber and sophomore Eoghan Conners.

Simone and Huber are all-around gymnasts and competed at last year's Section VI Championships. Kowalski said both have improved and are looking for both to return to sectionals.

Conners competes on rings and pommel horse. The rest of the team is newcomers: seniors Conley Brodziak, Brian Norton and Taylor Bentzoni, junior Zack Weisman, and sophomores Sean Johnson, Jonathan Flynn and Kenneth Martina. Bentzoni will compete on vault.

Martina, Flynn, Johnson, Bentzoni, Simone, Conners and Huber all get club training at Stumpf's Gymnastics. Their Stumpf's coach is Amherst graduate Harrison Reisweber, who won the Section VI all-around title in 2003. Reisweber is a junior at Buffalo State College.

Amherst finished 2-8 last year.
